There is an increasing trend worldwide for academic subjects such as mathematics, history, science, medicine to be taught in schools and universities using English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). In 2014 the Department of Education at the University of Oxford established a Centre for Research and Development into this area. The Centre has quickly established itself as a major hub for the research and teaching of EMI globally, and it works extensively with education institutions and organisations around the world to understand the impact of EMI on teaching, learning, assessing and teacher professional development.

The Department of Education is holding a two week course in Oxford in August that is aimed at teachers and lecturers from schools and universities around the world who teach their subject through English Medium Instruction. Please find information about the course here.

Julie Deardon, the Senior Research Fellow in EMI at the Department of Education is a frequent visitor to Japan. In Japan, universities and schools are increasingly interested in EMI as a way to boost their international competitiveness, and improve the English language standards and global aspirations of their students.
