Meet the team

The University of Oxford has had an office in Japan for over 20 years. This long-term presence is testament to the importance the University places on its relationship with Japan, and to the strength of its friendship with its Japanese partners and benefactors. From its location in the centre of Tokyo, the Japan Office aims to increase the quantity and range of mutually beneficial partnerships and to further the interests of the University of Oxford throughout the country.

Alison Beale

Alison Beale – Director

Alison Beale read Modern Languages (French and German Literature) at the University of Oxford and obtained a Masters in Advanced Japanese Studies from the University of Sheffield. After coming to Japan on the JET Programme, she then pursued a career in international cultural relations with the British Council, holding senior posts in Japan, Trinidad and Tobago, and China.  She holds voluntary positions as Vice-President of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan, Executive Director of the Japan-British Society, and is on the Board of the New National Theatre Tokyo.

Azuma-san

Mayumi Azuma – Executive Assistant

Mayumi Azuma has been working in the University of Oxford Japan Office for over ten years. She has degrees from Keio University and the University of Massachusetts, where she received a master’s degree in the History of Art.
