Oxford Botanic Garden: past, present and future perspectives

Founded in 1621 as a physic garden, the University of Oxford’s Botanic Garden has a world-class history and location. The Botanic Garden’s sister site, Harcourt Arboretum which was acquired by the University in 1947 also contains some of the finest tree collections and Capability Brown landscapes in Britain.

Oxford Botanic Garden is approaching its 400th Anniversary in 2021 and we are developing our vision of transformation which centres on research, collections, horticulture and arboriculture, profile-building and visitor attraction. In this talk Chris Thorogood, Head of Science and Public Engagement, and Ben Jones, Arboretum Curator, will explore both the rich history of Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum, the collections held at these sites, and our vision for the future.

This lecture is the fourth in our “Inside Oxford” series which explores some of the unique characteristics of the University of Oxford.
