The University of Oxford is one of Europe’s largest and best-known centres for Japanese Studies. A number of the world’s leading Japan experts are based at the University, and our extensive Japanese collections and libraries have been growing since the arrival of our first Japanese book at the Bodleian in 1629.
The 2017/18 academic year sees an exciting new development with the launch of our new MSc and MPhil programmes in Japanese Studies. These will combine the expertise we have in the Oriental Institute in linguistics and literature with the expertise of the Nissan Institute in modern Japanese society.
Join us on Tuesday 13 September to find out more about the new programmes and to hear taster lectures from two of our leading academics in the field.
I. Professor Hugh Whittaker, Professor in the Economy and Business of Japan (20 mins)
Brexit, Japan and the Unravelling of ‘Embedded Liberalism’
Britain’s Brexit vote, which sent shock waves throughout the global economy, was partly about Europe, but also about growing wealth inequalities, austerity and structural change within Britain. It was the culmination of the unravelling of the postwar ‘consensus’ on ‘embedded liberalism’. Japan’s postwar high growth model is also being unravelled, with slightly different fault lines. Being mindful of what the postwar models replaced, we need to think about where to go next.
II. Professor Ian Neary, Professor in the Politics of Japan (20 mins)
The Roads to Brexit, and Japan
There is still a great deal that is very unclear about how the negotiations will end up or even when they will begin. I will outline four possible models and suggest what implications they might have for British relations with Japan.
