Internationalising our Universities: English Medium Instruction
Julie Dearden, researcher and teacher trainer in English Medium Instruction, Department of Education

There is a growing global trend toward internationalising universities and, increasingly, schools. Going international almost always means that lecturers teach some or all of their academic subject through the medium of English. This is English Medium Instruction or EMI.

The motivations for going international and teaching students through the medium of English include a wish to:
• attract high level international students
• open up global opportunities in business and in academia for home students
• publish in English and therefore move up in the Higher Education rankings.

Students and parents often see EMI as a passport to success.

And so what about the teachers who suddenly have to teach their subject through the medium of English? There is very little support or professional development which helps them to face this challenge. This workshop run by Julie Dearden, is a ‘taster’ session of a longer EMI course which helps to support teachers in tackling one of their greatest challenges- how to teach their subject through EMI.

EMI Oxford was established in 2014 within the Department of Education as a centre for research and development into the global phenomenon of English Medium Instruction.
