Oxford Academics in Japan Lecture Series
Professor Gillies McKenna, Professor of Radiation Oncology and Biology, Fellow of Wolfson College

Cancer genetics tells us that each person’s cancer is as unique as their fingerprints, creating an opportunity for bespoke treatment, which as yet has failed to be delivered. This is in part due to the testing of targeted drug therapies in late stage disease, when recent research tells us the cancer is already resistant to most if not all interventions. Consequently most new therapies fail to be approved and reach the market.

In this lecture, Professor Gillies McKenna will talk about the latest advances in cancer research at the University of Oxford and introduce the University’s new Precision Cancer Medicine Institute. This institute aims to transform the current model for developing new cancer treatments by focusing on early stage cancer and by selecting the combination of therapies that are optimal for the potential to cure.

Professor Gillies McKenna is Head of the Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford and a  world expert in radiotherapy research. His research focuses on understanding the effect that radiation has on cells and how cancers can become resistant to radiotherapy. He is a Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford.
