The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford is currently showing a photography exhibition entitled “Kabuki – On Stage, Behind the Scenes: Photographs by Akio Kushida and Stephanie Berger”. The exhibition explores the history and traditions of kabuki, with a particular focus on the celebrated actor Nakamura Kanzaburo and his sons and heirs. The exhibition includes photographs of the actors backstage as they dress, apply make-up, and rehearse, as well as photographs onstage, of actual performances. The photographs give a strong visual insight into the colourful and little known world of this popular historical art form.

The exhibition is taking place in the Long Gallery of the Pitt Rivers Museum on South Parks Road in Oxford. It will run until 16 October 2016. Admission to the museum is free. Please find more information about the exhibition on the Pitt Rivers Museum website here.
