Oxford Academics in Japan Lecture Series Since the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 and the ensuing emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, the issue of nuclear safety and future of the world’s energy resources has become a hotly debated topic. In this lecture Professor Wade Allison tells the extraordinary story of how nuclear energy is a million times more powerful than fire — and yet far safer. How is this known for certain and why is it true? What does it mean for Japan, and for the rest of the world? Why don’t other people agree — or do they? What went wrong in the Fukushima accident and who was at fault? Professor Allison will address these issues and there will be plenty of time for questions afterwards. Professor Wade Allison is Emeritus Professor of Physics and a Fellow at Keble College, Oxford, where he has been based for the better part of forty years. He has also been a researcher at CERN and taught and written books on a wide range of subjects including nuclear and medical physics. He wrote the popular book “Radiation and Reason: The Impact of Science on a Culture of Fear” in 2009 and has long been active in trying to help overcome misunderstandings about nuclear radiation.
