Research at Oxford: Rooted in the past, looking to the future
Professor Ian Walmsley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation)
The University of Oxford is renowned throughout the world for the quality and diversity of its research. It is consistently ranked among the very top institutions in league tables across a wide range of subjects from medicine and sciences to the humanities and social sciences.
In this lecture which is part of our “Inside Oxford” series, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ian Walmsley will talk about what makes research at Oxford special. He will introduce some of the highlights of Oxford’s recent research and discuss how the University is adapting to changing circumstances to remain at the very forefront of academic endeavour in a very fast-moving modern environment. Covering issues such as funding, internal structures, links with industry, and innovation, this lecture will also look to the future and ask how Oxford aims to continue to lead the world in research in ways that benefit society on a national and a global scale.
Professor Ian Walmsley FRS is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) at the University of Oxford, Hooke Professor of Experimental Physics, and Professorial Fellow of St Hugh’s College. As Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), he overseas Oxford’s research and innovation strategies and policies. He chairs the University’s Research Committee and is responsible for coordinating the University’s relationships with its major research funders and the engagement of research activity with wider audiences.
