“Kabuki, Kappazuri and Kimono: Presenting Japanese art at the Ashmolean Museum”

The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s Museum of Art and Archaeology. It opened in 1683 and is the oldest public museum in the UK. There has been Japanese material in the Ashmolean’s collections from the earliest stages of the its history. The Shikanai Galleries on the second floor of the Museum provide a permanent space to present aspects of the collection, and regular displays and exhibitions such as the Tokyo:Art and Photography exhibition in 2021 also play an important role in presenting Japanese art in the UK.

In this talk Dr Clare Pollard, Curator of Japanese Art will introduce the Ashmolean’s wide-ranging Japanese art collections and show highlights of recent and future exhibitions and Japan-related activities.
